Enjoy a Day of Fossil Hunting Around Dallas

For a unique way to spend time outdoors, grab a small shovel and enjoy a day of fossil hunting. You might find everything from shark teeth to shells that are millions of years old. The best places for fossil hunting near our Victory Park apartments include:

Mineral Wells Fossil Park

Founded with assistance from the Dallas Paleontological Society, the Mineral Wells Fossil Park draws amateur fossil hunters and professional paleontologists alike. It features well-preserved Pennsylvanian Period fossils dating back over 300 million years. The most common are the stalks of crinoids. While they look like plants, they're really animals. The Park is open daily between 8:00 a.m. and 8:45 p.m. Admission is free.

Lake Whitney

Don't miss visiting Lake Whitney. It is one of the best places in Texas to search for fossils. You might also find rocks, petrified wood, and other unique items. Note while you can search for these items, the Corps of Engineers prohibits their removal.

Post Oak Creek

Nestled in Sherman, the Post Oak Creek welcomes fossil hunters searching for shark teeth. For the best results, use a small shovel to scoop up some gravel. Place it in a sieve and sluice in the water to remove any clay or dirt, and you may reveal exciting treasures. Additionally, you can also search along the creek for glass, arrowheads, and pieces of old pottery. While you can fossil hunt at Post Oak year-round, the best time is during the summer months when the water level is low.

After fossil hunting, enjoy a meal at a restaurant near downtown Dallas. If you are not yet a resident of Cirque, please contact us. We will schedule a tour where you can discover firsthand the amenities and floor plans our apartments near American Airlines Center have to offer.
