Trinity Audubon Center

The Trinity Audubon Center offers a gateway to exploring the country's largest urban hardwood forest. The center works to conserve and restore natural ecosystems. As you explore the trails, watch for northern harriers, which are medium-sized raptors featuring long, broad wings and long tails. These birds also boast owl-like faces and fly low over the ground when hunting.

Cedar Hill State Park

Just outside of Dallas, Cedar Hill State Park provides an escape from daily life. Stretching nearly 1,900 acres, it welcomes everyone from birdwatchers to mountain bikers. The park's bird list boasts around 200 species. A highlight includes the greater roadrunner. Recognized by their distinctive shape, these birds have long necks and legs and very long tails. Greater roadrunners are fast runners and spend most of their time hunting for lizards.

Cedar Ridge Preserve

Stretching 600 acres, the Cedar Ridge Preserve comes complete with nature trails and butterfly gardens. The park is popular among birdwatchers. Many come in hopes of spotting the rare black-capped vireo. Small songbirds, these feathery creatures are somewhat stocky with hooked bills. They're known for their facial patterns, and males are identified by their jet-black heads. Black-capped vireos call thick, scrubby habitats home. You may spot them hopping between branches or singing (males) from the tops of bushes.
